Studies on Tissue Storage Iron in the Immature Rabbit

Abstract
The authors observed the changes of the concentrations of both fractions of tissue storage iron, hemosiderin and ferritin, of the liver, spleen, renal cortex and medulla, bone marrow and duodenum in the. immatur rabbits at the age of 1 month, 3 months or 5 months after birth. The results thus obtained have been analysed and discussed and the conclusion drawn herefrom is as follows:
1. The storage iron concentration in the above named organs of the immature rabbits- increased slowly rapidly after birth ; that in the liver and spleen reached the level of the mature rabbits at about 3 months after birth, while that in other organs still remained under the level of the mature rabbits even at 5 months after birth.
2. The ferritin iron/hemosiderin iron ratio of each organ was almost constant in the immature rabbits and was not materially different from that of the corresponding organ of the mature rabbis. In the liver, spleen and bone marrow the ratio was nearly equal to 1, whereas in the kidney and duodenum it was much lower than 1.
